Join the Outing Club!

The Wisconsin Hoofers Outing Club is a year-round outdoor activities club for all interests, abilities and backgrounds.  Hoofers bike, kayak, canoe and rock climb when it's warm; cross-country and telemark ski when it's cold; and cave, backpack and camp all year long!  We offer a wide range of affordable adventures.  Average trip costs usually are just the cost of food and gas. We welcome all levels of experience, beginners and advanced.  Trips range from high-intensity adventure to low-key relaxation.  Club members will teach you the skills you need for activities.  Boating lessons and beginners-only trips and workshops are offered throughout the year. Rock climb at Devil's Lake and all around Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, the Dakotas, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.  We'll teach you the skills, you decide how high you want to go. Bike around Madison or the state.  Try mountain biking in Kettle Moraine or the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  Check out our tandem for double the fun! Kayak or canoe down Wisconsin's many rivers or take a moonlight canoe trip on Lake Mendota.  Sea Kayak in Lake Michigan or Lake Superior.  Practice rolling in the Natatorium pool.  And don't forget the annual Whitewater Rodeo! Visit the wilderness nearby or hundreds or miles away.  Take a day hike or a week-long excursion.  Camp out in Door County, the Porcupine or Smoky Mountains, Canada, or even frozen Lake Mendota! Experience underground adventure caving throughout the Midwest.  Go on a subterranean Hodag Hunt! Go cross-country skiing evenings at Elver Park, afternoons in local state parks, weekends in northern Wisconsin, or hut-to-hut out west.  Learn how to execute a telemark turn.  Try some snowshoes on for size.  Play hockey and skate inside the Shell or outside at city parks. Use our gear!  We have mountain and touring bikes, a fleet of sea kayaks, whitewater kayaks and canoes, tents, backpacks, stoves, climbing ropes, helmets, harnesses, shoes, and more - all free for members to use on club-sponsored trips!  Usually all you need to provide is appropriate clothing and a sleeping bag. Hoofers is a volunteer organization bringing together University of Wisconsin - Madison students, faculty, staff and Wisconsin Union members.  Anyone can join the Union! Want to join or find out more?  Call the Hoofer office at 262-1630 or come by one of our regular weekly meetings.  We meet every Tuesday at 7:00pm at the Memorial Union, usually on the lower level in Bradley Lounge.  There's always a membership representative there to help you get started or stop by the Outdoor Program Office anytime Monday through Friday.  Our membership dues are very affordable; check them out here.  Thanks for stopping by!
